THE HISTORY OF

CARMEL, CALIFORNIA

 

The area of Carmel was originally founded by Spanish explorer, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Settlers spread out in tents, enjoyed beach picnics, and promoted creativity and an appreciation of art and literature throughout its small community.

The town didn’t officially become a city until 1916, and with a population of less than 500. But its commitment to art and culture was prevalent. Its library had 3,000 volumes and the town paper featured original poetry in every issue.
