THE DEVELOPMENT OF
Seaside was conceived as an outgrowth of the local resort community. The town’s founder, Dr. John Roberts, lived in nearby Pacific Grove when he purchased 160 acres of land and divided it into vacation lots.
In 1910, Base Fort Ord opened in Seaside, bringing over 20,000 infantry members and civilian workers. Though Ford Ord closed in 1994, it is accredited with the area’s diverse growth. Today, Seaside continues to serve as a resort area while also housing a strong community.
