The 3 Best Local Coffee Shops on the Monterey Peninsula (From a Realtor® Who Runs on Caffeine)
As a Monterey Peninsula Realtor®, my days start early, end late, and often include zig-zagging between Monterey, Pacific Grove, Seaside, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Pebble Beach.
And if there’s one thing this job requires in abundance…
it’s great coffee.
Over the years, I've tested just about every café between Big Sur and Marina. But three spots consistently stand out — not because they’re trendy or tourist-approved, but because they are where locals actually go for truly great coffee, good vibes, and authenticity.
Here are the 3 best local coffee shops on the Monterey Peninsula, straight from someone who fuels up at all of them on a regular basis.
Let’s dive in.
☕ 1. ACME Coffee Roasting (Seaside)
The Monterey Peninsula’s Hidden Gem for Serious Coffee Drinkers
If you’re looking for the definition of local, no-frills, and absolutely incredible coffee, ACME is it.
This place is all business.
No drive-thru.
No cozy seating area.
Just one small stand-up table outside, and baristas who move at lightning speed, crafting some of the best drinks on the Peninsula.
Why Locals Love ACME
-
It’s truly a hidden gem — tucked away in an unusual industrial location.
-
The vibe is local meets hipster, with regulars who don’t need a menu.
-
The coffee is exceptional, especially the Iced Vanilla Latte (the BEST in town).
-
They roast their own beans and supply them to many other local cafés and restaurants.
-
Service is fast — ideal for people on the go.
ACME is the perfect stop when I’m heading out for morning showings or meeting a client in Carmel and need real coffee without the fluff.
If you're a purist or prefer to skip the crowds, this is your spot.
☕ 2. Captain + Stoker (Monterey & Pacific Grove)
Earthy, Hipster, Energetic — A Downtown Favorite With Major Local Love
Captain + Stoker isn’t just a coffee shop — it’s a vibe.
Their downtown Monterey location is a magnet for cyclists, students, remote workers, and locals who appreciate earthy, high-quality coffee and fun, upbeat ambience.
Inside, you’ll find:
-
Loud, great music playing through a projector
-
A stylish, hipster atmosphere
-
Plenty of locals hanging out or working
-
Some of the Peninsula’s best latte art
Whether you're in need of a pick-me-up between showings or looking for a spot to catch up on emails, Captain + Stoker delivers great energy.
Two Locations, Two Experiences
-
Downtown Monterey: Sit, hang out, and enjoy the lively vibe.
-
Pacific Grove (to-go only): A smaller location with a tiny ledge to stand and sip — perfect for grabbing something quick before a beach walk or appointment.
If you enjoy earthy-tasting coffee with character, you’ll feel right at home here.
☕ 3. Counterpoint Coffee (Seaside)
A Creative, Music-Lover’s Coffee Haven With Room to Work and Drink in Peace
Counterpoint Coffee is one of the most unique cafés on the Monterey Peninsula — and easily one of my favorites.
The first thing you notice?
The wall of vinyl records — an entire collection the baristas actually play throughout the day.
Then, if you look closely, you’ll spot a recording studio inside the café (even if you never see anyone in it).
The vibe is creative, laid-back, and welcoming — the kind of place where you can sit for an hour to work, meet a client, or just enjoy a slow morning.
Why Counterpoint Stands Out
-
Tons of indoor and outdoor seating
-
Great for working or meeting clients
-
Coffee that tastes very similar to ACME (likely sourced from them!)
-
The “Undertow” drink — a must-try
-
Layered espresso
-
Homemade vanilla syrup
-
Oat milk or regular milk
-
Taken as a shot… and absolutely delicious
-
-
Open on Sundays (unlike ACME)
Counterpoint is where I go when I need a longer break between showings or want a café with real room to breathe.
🌄 Final Thoughts: The Monterey Peninsula Does Coffee Right
Whether you’re new to the Peninsula, relocating, or simply exploring local favorites, these three shops represent the heart of our coastal community:
-
ACME for speed, quality, and local-roasted excellence
-
Captain + Stoker for energy, vibe, and earthy flavor
-
Counterpoint for creativity, seating, and the iconic “Undertow”
As someone who spends every day crisscrossing Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, Seaside, and Pebble Beach, coffee shops are my second office — and these are the places where the Peninsula’s true local culture shines.
