One of the quickest ways to feel like a local on the Monterey Peninsula is to know where to grab a great pint—whether it’s after a beach walk, a Saturday downtown, or a day spent exploring neighborhoods.
As a Monterey Peninsula Realtor® and a 3rd-generation agent with over 10 years in the business, I’m constantly asked about lifestyle—where people actually go, what’s worth it, and what feels local instead of touristy. Here are five breweries (and brewery-adjacent taprooms) that consistently deliver.
1) Alvarado Street Brewery (Downtown Monterey + Carmel)
If you want the flagship Monterey craft beer experience, this is it—downtown energy, a strong tap list, and a reputation that reaches well beyond the peninsula. Their Monterey brewpub is a go-to for locals and visitors alike, and they also have a Carmel location if you’re pairing a tasting-room day with dinner.
Best for: Downtown nights, groups, beer + food pairing
Local tip: A safe bet when friends visit—everyone will find something they like.
2) Other Brother Beer Co. (Seaside)
Other Brother has become one of the most community-driven hangouts in Seaside—great beer, solid food, and a space that works for everything from casual afternoons to meetups and events. It’s the kind of place that reinforces Seaside’s growing local scene.
Best for: Local vibe, easy meet-ups, Seaside energy
Local tip: A perfect stop if you’re spending time in Upper or Coastal Seaside neighborhoods.
3) Peter B’s Brewpub (Monterey)
Peter B’s has a long local legacy and sits right in the heart of Monterey, making it a classic choice for a relaxed pint that still feels like you’re in the action. It’s casual, central, and reliably Monterey—easy to enjoy without overthinking it.
Best for: Easy downtown access, casual nights
Local tip: Great for visitors staying near the waterfront who want something familiar and local.
4) Fieldwork Brewing Company Beer Garden (Monterey)
Fieldwork’s Monterey beer garden is the definition of laid-back peninsula living—outdoor seating, an ever-changing tap list, and an easygoing atmosphere. It’s ideal for sunny afternoons and spontaneous meet-ups.
Best for: Daytime hangs, beer flights, outdoor vibes
Local tip: One of the easiest places to settle in and enjoy the afternoon.
5) Dust Bowl Brewing Co. Tap Depot (Monterey)
Dust Bowl is my personal favorite on the Monterey Peninsula—especially if you’re into sours. While they’re known for a wide and consistent lineup, what really sets this spot apart is their seltzer, which is actually their #1 seller and for good reason—it’s incredibly refreshing and surprisingly flavorful.
What makes it even better is the setting. Dust Bowl is located in the old Monterey train station, giving it a unique historic backdrop that feels authentically Monterey. It’s an easy stop before or after a coastal walk or bike ride and one of those places that fits seamlessly into everyday life rather than feeling like a “destination.”
Best for: Sours, seltzers, casual pints, coastal walk pairings
Local tip: If you like lighter, tart, refreshing pours—and appreciate a place with real local history—this is the spot you’ll keep coming back to.
Honorable Mentions (Worth the Detour)
If you’re building out your own brewery rotation, these additional local stops are worth checking out:
English Ales Brewery (Marina)
A longtime local classic that many peninsula residents still talk about. If you’ve been around the area for a while, chances are you’ve heard a few stories about this spot.
Post No Bills (Sand City)
A fun craft beer stop when you’re bouncing between Monterey and Carmel—easy to swing by and always a relaxed, social vibe.
Carmel Craft Brewing Company (Carmel Valley / Mid-Valley)
A great addition if your day takes you into Carmel Valley, especially when you’re mixing sunshine, wine-country energy, and a casual local beer stop.
If you lean toward sours or lighter, refreshing pours like I do, Dust Bowl is tough to beat—but these honorable mentions are perfect for mixing things up.
Why this matters if you’re moving here
Living on the Monterey Peninsula is all about your weekend rhythm—coffee runs, coastal walks, and yes, a great brewery stop. If walkability to downtown Monterey, quick access to Seaside, or Carmel convenience matters to you, choosing the right neighborhood makes a bigger difference than most people expect.
